LANtastic(TM) Network Operating System Version 4.0
Preliminary Specifications
To anyone who believes that all big-capability PC networks demand big bucks,
big hassle and big RAM, we offer the Artisoft(TM) LANtastic network.
Only LANtastic gives you a long list of powerful features at a price even the
smallest installation can afford. So you can afford to link as few as two PCs.
And grow to 300 PCs. Without sacrificing capabilities or speed.
And only LANtastic uses the smallest RAM of any LAN -- less than 40K on a server
and under 12K on a workstation. So you can run all your programs on the PCs you
already have, without springing for the high cost of memory upgrades.
Plus, LANtastic NOS can be run on four different hardware platforms --with
LANtastic 2Mbps adapters or Ethernet adapters, as well as in a serial / parallel
/ modem version, or in a version that runs on selected third party adapter
cards.
Introducing LANtastic NOS version 4.0.
By carefully reworking how our NetBIOS and Network Operating System function
together, we've created a system that's considerably faster than our previous
award-winning NOS. Here are some of the innovative features you'll find on
LANtastic NOS version 4.0:
Full Microsoft Windows(TM) 3.0 and above support.
Now you can use LANtastic with Microsoft Windows on both servers and
workstations in any mode including Enhanced 386. And with the purchase of
LANtastic for Windows, you'll be able to utilize Windows' easy-to-use
features on both NET and NET_MGR.
Unloadable from memory.
If you ever need to free up what little RAM LANtastic uses, you can now
remove LANtastic's network software from memory without rebooting.
Improved installation.
Now LANtastic is not only easier to install, it also allows you to set up
your whole network -- servers, workstations, and user accounts -- when you
install the system software. With just one disk and one manual, LANtastic
makes it easy to do it right the first time.
A new LANcache(TM).
LANcache set a new standard for network caching software by caching both
reads and writes. And our new LANcache is even faster, more reliable and more
efficient, designed to be fully compatible with Microsoft Windows. In fact,
when LANcache detects that Windows is running, it will release its own memory
to Windows to allow better performance.
Remote processing.
The NET RUN command lets you remotely issue commands to a network server.
This means you can use your fastest server for RAM and hardware-intensive
tasks -- database sorts, compiles and backups -- while youÆre using your
local workstation for remote processing.
Remote shutdown.
Now you can shutdown a server remotely. You can even schedule shutdown for a
future time and users will be warned at key times prior to the shutdown.
UPS support.
If you have a UPS connected to your server, LANtastic will now work in unison
with it to safeguard your network. If the UPS signals a server that a
shutdown is imminent, LANtastic will warn all the network users, give them
time to log off, then close all the network files so that no one loses any
work. If the power returns, LANtastic NOS will tell the users theirs nothing
to worry about.
ALONE: Artisoft's Standalone Server program.
If you want to set up a dedicated server, the ALONE program will allow it to
service the network with unsurpassed performance. By side-stepping DOS, ALONE
allows true multitasking on a network server. Your computer will be able to
perform more simultaneous user requests with no loss in performance.
Wildcard usernames.
Now you can create a single username such as ACCT* and assign it a password
and access rights. Users can then log in with any username that has the ACCT
prefix, such as ACCT-LINDA. This can save much time during setup since you
only need to create one user account for a group of users. The server is
still secure, however, because the user group can still be assigned passwords
and access rights.
